Shizuoka is famous for mikan (Japanese oranges), ocha (green tea) and more recently ichigo (strawberries) which are used for the Christmas cakes referred to in an earlier post. The greenhouses arrayed over a large section of sea coast produce two crops of strawberries per year. Ieyasu (first name) began a 300 year dynasty in Japan which ended in the late 1800s when power was restored to the emperor. But his influence is still very much a part of every day Japan. His education took place in Shizuoka and a special shrine was created for him overlooking Shizuoka and the ocean where he is buried.
